Why I Wear an Evil Eye
There’s a gold necklace I never take off — and most days, there’s an evil eye bracelet on my wrist, too.
Not because I think the world is out to get me and not because I’m afraid. But because I believe in energetic hygiene. As an empath, an intuitive person, and someone who works with energy, it’s important that I know how to protect my energy while helping you shift yours.
The Origins: Turkey, Greece, and Beyond
The evil eye symbol — known as the nazar in Turkey and the mati in Greece — dates back thousands of years. You’ll see it everywhere: hanging in homes, in cars, on keychains, strung on gold chains and even on clothing.
The belief behind it is simple: envy, jealousy, or ill intention, whether conscious or unconscious, carries energy. And that energy can affect you. The symbol itself, an eye staring back, is said to reflect or deflect that energy. Instead of absorbing negativity, it sends it back to its source. Brilliant.
Whether you take that literally or metaphorically, the message is powerful: you don’t have to carry what isn’t yours.
Across cultures throughout the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Latin America, and South Asia, you’ll find variations of this same belief. Different names. Same understanding.
Human beings have always known that energy moves between us.
My evil eye necklace broke (fell right off of my neck!) the morning after a tarot event in December of 2023 after a series of really heavy, intense readings.
When It Breaks
There’s another belief I’ve always found meaningful: when the evil eye falls off or breaks, it has absorbed the most negative energy it can hold. It did its job.
In many traditions, a cracked or broken evil eye isn’t bad luck — it’s protection fulfilled. The idea is that it intercepted something meant for you.
You can see that as mystical or symbolic. But here’s what I’ve noticed: every time mine has broken, it’s been during a season where I was carrying a lot OR was transmuting a lot for my clients in their tarot readings.
And I replace it instantly. 🙂
The Pieces I Wear
I wear two: a necklace that I wear to protect me from people and a bracelet I wear to protect me from spirit. Simply put, I make sure my energy is clean both in the physical realm and the astral realm.
The evil eye necklace is from Satya Jewelry — a piece I found in an incredible plant and gift store in Dallas on a work trip in 2022 when I needed some protection from someone who was difficult to work with.
I remember walking into that store knowing I needed reinforcement. That necklace felt like quiet armor from that moment forward.
The evil eye bracelet is from Kathe Cuervo, discovered on a work trip to Miami — in the Wynwood area — back in 2017 when I was working, again, in a challenging work environment.
Different cities. Different chapters. Same theme.
I’ve replaced both about three to four times each over the years, always from the same vendor, not because I’m careless with jewelry but…
Because I work with a lot people.
Because I hold space for people.
Because I lead.
Because I channel.
Because I absorb more than I should sometimes.
And when one breaks, I don’t panic. I thank it. 🙏🏼
We All Wear Talismans
This isn’t that different from wearing a cross, a Star of David, a saint medal, a hamsa. It just depends on what you believe in.
Some people wear a cross to feel close to Christ.
Some wear a Star of David to honor their Jewish faith.
Some carry crystals. (I do!)
Some keep photos of loved ones in their wallets. (I do this too!)
We’ve always used symbols to anchor ourselves. The evil eye is simply the one that resonates with me.
